Local Teen Entrepreneur Announces the Opening of His Ice Cream Shop in Downtown Frederick

Refurbished garage space located at 4 North Carroll Street

FREDERICK, MD., OCTOBER 28, 2022 – Sixteen year-old Sasha Hoffman opened Hoffman Brothers Ice Cream in Frederick’s Historic District today. Located in what was once a vacant garage across from the Post Office, Hoffman Brothers brings award-winning Taharka Brothers Ice Cream to Frederick for the first time.

“I can’t believe how nice everyone is when I tell them about my shop,” Sasha said. “The people at Downtown Frederick Partnership helped me figure out how to open a business in the historic district and our family friends Julie Rutzin and Chad Stull helped me build the shop.”

Sasha said that his suppliers at Taharka Brothers have also helped him navigate the ins and outs of running an ice cream scoop shop.

Sasha started working on his idea for an ice cream shop early in 2020 and has spent the last two years negotiating with suppliers, getting permits and approvals, and refurbishing the garage, located at 4 North Carroll Street. His business was a recipient of a Project Restore Grant from the State of Maryland which paid part of the cost of converting the long-vacant building into an Ice Cream Shop.

The shop is using the winter to gear up for the 2023 summer season, but is embracing the cold with some fun promotions:

  • First Snow Snow Angels: Half price ice cream with you post a photo of your snow angel the first day schools are closed for snow
  • NYE: Sober and fun midnight ice cream celebration
  • Cold Weather Ice Bucket Challenge: Free ice cream when you post a video of your Ice Bucket Challenge or make a donation to the ALS Association in January.

Sasha’s business turned into something of a class project last year as his 9th grade Language Arts class and his teacher, Jill Peterson, helped him through countless edits of his business plan and applications. Sasha attends Friends Meeting School in Ijamsville.

And what about the brothers? Sasha said, “my shop is called Hoffman Brothers, and I’ve got to give credit to my brothers, Andrei and Val. Andrei helped with technology and installing appliances. And Val has a driver’s license which was kind of important. Val also helped with social media and planning and is helping me scoop ice cream during the opening.”

Taharka Brothers was ranked Best Ice Cream this year by both Baltimore Magazine and The Baltimore Sun. Their factory in Hampden produces rich and decadent small batch Ice Cream with flavors like Honey Graham, Roasted Strawberry, Chocolate Love, and Key Lime Pie.

Hoffman Brothers will be open on weekends from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and from 2p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Sasha plans to expand the shop’s hours in the Spring/Summer.
