Stanford University Football Practice Field Now Features Shaw Sports Turf Synthetic Surface

This spring, the football team’s practice field, officially Dan Elliott practice field, received a new synthetic turf surface featuring Shaw Sports Turf’s Legion 2.0 turf system.

Located in the San Francisco Bay area, Stanford University is one of the world’s leading research institutes. The private university enrolls over 16,000 students on its 8,180-acre campus. The school boasts a robust academic community as well as an impressive offering of sports. The school’s athletic facilities are also among some of the most state-of-the-art collegiate sports facilities in the nation. This spring, the football team’s practice field, officially Dan Elliott practice field, received a new synthetic turf surface featuring Shaw Sports Turf’s Legion 2.0 turf system.

“The field was past it’s time, and needed to be replaced,” explains Blaise Resifo, Director of Sports Turf for Stanford University. The field’s existing turf was over 10 years old and showing signs of wear. The old turf needed to come out. When the search for a turf company began, the school knew that they wanted a durable, safe, and high-quality product.

“We did our research, gathered information, looked at other facilities featuring Shaw turf, and decided that Shaw would suit our needs best,” said Resifo. “The data on the infill product was particularly interesting.” The infill product used on this field is Shaw’s unique blend of crumb rubber and sand that reduces infill flyout.

Once the decision was made to go with Shaw Sports Turf, the team worked together to determine the best overall turf system for the school’s needs. The school installed 89,337 square feet of Legion 2.0 on the practice field. The Legion 2.0 synthetic turf system was chosen for its performance characteristics, infill flyout control, and overall durability and stability. Legion 2.0 is comprised of both Bolt monofilament and slit film fibers, with optimized face weight for performance and infill flyout control. It’s one of the most durable and popular products on the market. The Legion system provides better ball roll than natural grass, with the benefits of added durability and infill control.

The field also now features the new, updated Stanford logo and branding.

The new turf field was installed on April 18th, 2022, one week ahead of schedule, which was beneficial to the school and points to the success of the project. “The entire process ran very smoothly, quickly. The timeline was smooth, and we were constantly in contact with Shaw sifting through the details,” said Blaise. The school was able to hold athletic conditioning on the new field just days after installation.

“We’ve received very pristine reviews from students, staff, and the community,” said Blaise.

“I’m happy Shaw Sports Turf has been given the opportunity to be involved with Stanford University Athletics and its storied football program. They have shown a commitment to providing the absolute best facilities for their athletes, and this new turf system is no exception. This will be something the university can be proud of for years to come. GO Stanford!” said Shaw Sports Turf Territory Manager, Matt Cohen.
